So there I was doing the husband trudge following behind the beautiful Mrs Beatthedrum around our local outlet stores. You know the husband trudge, slight behind, slightly miserable face, much tutting and muttering about have to do the Christmas shopping when I can do it all online at home and for less money. Using the well practiced husband lines like
“I am sure they will like it”
“HOW MUCH!!!!”
“Do we have to send them something, I thought they were dead?”
“Yes yes that will do”
“Can we go for a coffee now”
“It looks lovely dear but why are we looking for shoes for you when we are supposed to be shopping for Christmas presents for aunt Matila?”
So there I was lost in my own little world when the face of Doctor Greg House MD popped into my head. Why? I have no idea, and then I remembered one of the classic Dr House quotes…”Everybody lies!”
This got me thinking its true everybody lies, or spreads the truth thinly. In fact we are ALL EVIL, none of us are good, we all have EVIL thoughts and we even act some of them out. From not letting someone into the traffic cue by ignoring them, pinching the odd sheet of paper from work, telling the kids that Santa exists, saying “I’m ok” when asked how you’re doing by the stewards when you feel like a spade has been used to pummel your face in. We even lie to ourselves, I’ll start to diet on Monday, no next Monday, ill start Monday, no not last Monday, Monday coming. I’ll read my bible every day without fail, ok ill start tomorrow. We all lie.
It never fails to surprise me that God wanted to know us and be with us even though we are so thoroughly evil and corrupt. He is perfect, we are imperfect, He is Holy, we are evil, He is truthfully, we lie, He loves, we hate and despise.
Lucky for us there was one who did not like, who didn’t do evil, who was Holy and Perfect. Jesus Christ now the imperfect can meet the perfect, the Evil can come to the Holy and call Him Father.

Yes, but if I REALLY tell my wife the truth of what I think about the secularization of Christmas, I’ll be sleeping next to a VERY cold shoulder. Better to keep my mouth shut. Hey, can silence be a lie? I remember something I was told in Bible college. “Believe all you preach, just don’t preach all you believe.” Good advice, that.
I am lucky in that ways the Mrs is not too secularised about christmas. But she loves to give gifts….. and buy some for her
